We Asked ... You Answered

Last month, we asked, “What kind of volunteer activities are you doing in 2009 to support America's troops, veterans and military families?”

VFW members and communities across America are doing what they can to help. Some focus on helping the service member overseas, sending care packages and personal thank-you cards and greeting troops as they deploy and come home.

Others are working to ensure our heroes are not forgotten while they serve, donating to VFW programs, volunteering at veterans’ hospitals and remembering veterans through ceremonies and memorials. Here is just a small sample of responses:

  • “Each year I adopt three or four soldiers. I write weekly letters of support and send monthly care packages. I crochet booties and make blankets for the wounded. I send toothbrushes and toothpaste to the wounded in Germany.”
  • “Primarily, I am staying active in the VFW and my church.”
  • “I will be giving WWII veterans their medals and certificates. I also put up the veterans flags at the graveyard next door to me."
  • “We are fundraising in our small town to build a Veterans Memorial.”
  • “We are putting together a drive to collect small toiletries and items that the soldiers can use while in combat in Afghanistan & Iraq.”

The VFW appreciates your feedback. Weigh in on this month's question and share how you feel about important veterans' issues.
