Auxiliary Sisters Serve Children and Community During Veterans’ Week in November, Lucy Rossi and her sisters are hard at work in the community, honoring the valor of veterans and educating children on the sacrifices made by America’s heroes. “We love going to schools to talk about the flag,” said Rossi, member of Sayreville Memorial Post 4699 Ladies Auxiliary, Sayreville, N.J. “We brought a veteran along to tell the kids what a veteran is and what he did during the wars. “The children enjoyed our visit, and we answered their questions, sang songs and handed out goody bags.” The Honor Guard dedicated United States and POW flags at the schools they visited during the week, and stood guard while the students performed plays in honor of veterans. Later during the Veterans’ Week festivities, the Honor Guard performed services at the graves of deceased servicemembers. “We were very busy during that week!” said Rossi. But Auxiliary 4699 likes to stay busy. Recently, they adopted two additional military units for a grand total of 15 units. The Ladies raise money for care packages through their annual VFW Buddy Poppy drive. “We send soap, shampoo, candy, gum, playing cards, pens, notepads, envelopes and so much more!” she said. When the time comes for the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests, Rossi and her sisters visit schools and youth organizations to spread the word. It’s no accident that members of Auxiliary 4699 have dedicated themselves to children through Veterans’ Week activities and scholarship contests. “We want to be there for these children, supporting their education,” she said. “They are the future, and they’ll make this country a better place.” |
