“Just to Hear His Voice”
Retired Military Mother and Daughter Floored by VFW Free Phone Call

Sgt. Brandi Lee Majerus understands the impact that deployment has on a family.

Retired after eight years of service, and two tours in Iraq, Majerus knows both sides of the coin and the importance of day-to-day family conversation.

“Even though I have been there before, the hardest day of my life was when I took my husband to the airport ... knowing I wouldn’t see him for one year,” Majerus shared. “Being the parent and wife on this side is harder than I’d ever imagined.”

Thanks to a VFW “Free Call Day,” her husband PFC Curtis Majerus could speak with his family at no cost. This was his first call home since arriving in Iraq.

She remembers the surprise call from her husband.

“I was so proud to tell Curtis that our first-grade daughter, Aria, made the honor roll.

“We e-mail each other every day, but hearing him say ‘I love you’ was better than I could have ever imagined.

“Because of the VFW, I can be assured that my husband is not only safe, but thinking of our family … and I can assure him we can hardly wait for his return.”

Majerus is grateful for the many programs VFW offers. Being a part of the Warrior Transition Unit in Hawaii helped her get into college. She is now a student at Colorado Tech.

“The VFW has done an amazing job helping heroes stay strong,” she said. “Programs like these are morale boosters for military members and their families.”

Brandi and Curtis will celebrate their one-year anniversary July 19, 2009.
