It began with a simple conversation. Sgt. Tallman, Illinois National Guard 135th Chemical Co. and VFW Post 2955 member, spoke with Steve Preston, commander of VFW Post 2955, Roscoe, Ill., about doing something for his unit before they deployed in September for Afghanistan.
A few more conversations and a Post meeting set the wheels in motion. The result? A send-off party for the 135th Chemical Co. with over 700 supportive attendees.
“We wanted to extend our thanks for their service and [for them] to know that we, and the community, were behind them 110% on their deployment,” said Steve Thomas, Post 2955 Quartermaster.
Family, friends, veterans and complete strangers came to Harlem High School to enjoy food and wish the service members the best and a safe return. VFW members engaged many of the young men and women to let them know how they could help.
“We do not want you, the soldier, to worry about a furnace problem or leaky water problem back home,” said Paul Kallembach, VFW Dept. of Illinois Membership Director, during a speech.
“We want you to focus on your mission and returning to your families. The VFW can help your family back here with just a phone call.”
The day displayed a strong camaraderie between the troops and veterans. Many young service members thanked the “older” veterans who had already served their country.
“It was a show of true comrades-in-arms there for each other,” commented Thomas.
In the same spirit, the 135th Chemical Co. presented Preston with a flag and case displaying their insignia and inscription—“To Honor Those Who Served Before.”
Post 2955 received a MAP grant of $1,200 to feed all in attendance. Children played games while adults bid in a silent auction to benefit the local Family Readiness Group. One auction even offered a chance to throw a pie at two sergeants of the 135th Chemical Co.
The tribute would have never happened without many helping hands. Post 2955 Ladies Auxiliary was instrumental in the success of the event, while the Ladies Auxiliary of Post 9759, Loves Park, adopted the unit. Posts 998, 1461 and 5149 also had members in attendance along with other veteran organizations.
“If there was ever a team effort in the history of our Post, this was it!” said Thomas. |
