Making Every Day Veterans Day Veterans have holidays like Veterans Day and Memorial Day to commemorate their service, but what about the other days of the year? The Ladies Auxiliary of Meuse Post 194 in Salisbury, Md., wanted to make sure disabled veterans at local nursing homes got the attention they deserved every day of the year. “We heard from a nursing home director that few people come to see our veterans outside of the holidays,” said Carolyn Garrison, a member of the Auxiliary. “We decided to let them know how much we appreciate them. “We talk to them and bring cheery and smile worthy treats.” Garrison is in charge of a committee of five members who regularly visit the nursing homes. “Since becoming chairwoman, it has been my goal to visit the veterans in our local nursing homes at least once a month, and that’s a goal we’ve been able to accomplish,” she said. Garrison enjoys every visit and encourages her fellow Auxiliary members to join her committee on their visits. There are about 100 veterans in five local nursing homes, and the ladies try to talk to as many of the veterans as time allows. Armed with VFW Buddy Poppies, Beanie Babies and “tray favors” made by the members, they brighten the day of the veterans in the home. “The best part of our day is when we see a delighted smile on their faces,” said Garrison. “So many of them just want to have a cheery conversation with someone. Garrison has many fond memories of her visits in the nursing home, but one experience was particularly touching. “We gave one disabled veteran a Beanie Baby and we told him ‘Here’s a hug,’ ” she recalled. “And then, he gently took it in his hand and held it to his cheek.”
