Deployed Defender a Proud VFW Advocate |
|
As a VFW member since 2000, Quartermaster Chief Nancy Nelson, 35, knew about VFW Operation Uplink™. But after her deployment to the Middle East, she has seen the true power of the program.
“It’s wonderful to see firsthand what VFW is doing, and I can’t wait to bring my experience back to my Post,” she said. “The Sailors are grateful, and they always have a smile when I give them a phone card.”
Nelson, a member of Post 2593 in Arnold, Mo., says the phone cards are a great conversation starter to bring up her experiences in the VFW. Nelson joined the VFW out of respect for other veterans, and she hopes the members of her unit do the same.
“We need the VFW because they understand us,” she said.
Nelson can’t wait to return home to her husband, Michael, and two children, Erik, 13, and Savannah, 8.
“The first thing I’ll do is hug my children!” she said. “Then, we’re going to a real restaurant with real food and real beer!”
Prior to her deployment, Nelson was very involved with VFW programs assisting veterans. After she catches up with her family, Nelson will visit her friends at the Post and continue to serve in the VFW.
“Post 2593 is truly my extended family,” said Nelson. “I really appreciate the constant support I have received!” |
