Raising the Bar with VFW Attorneys Partner with VFW to Offer More Than Advice for Military Members |
|
The VFW Department of Texas is collaborating with Vinson & Elkins, a Dallas law firm, to help our heroes with the specific legal challenges they face.
There is a high demand for legal aid for returning veterans. Many of the service members’ cases stem from deployment, e.g., custody battles, debt collection matters and evictions. Texas VFW Assistant Adjutant Dan West is elated by the partnership.
“The cases run the gamut, but regardless of the nature, Vinson & Elkins can help,” West said. “Scores of veterans can finally access the legal resources they need from one of the largest law firms in the nation.”
West screens each case prior to interviewing an applicant over the phone. Then Vinson & Elkins takes over. West noted that criminal cases are not accepted.
The pro bono program, “Veterans Initiative,” commenced following a flurry of media coverage of incredible stories about legal problems for veterans and active-duty military members.
“Legal defense is not something that most people think to donate, but the VFW sees a great need in this area. While they protect us overseas, we must protect their rights at home. It’s the least we can do,” West concluded. |
