West Virginia Ladies Auxiliary Welcomes Home, Sends off Heroes |
|
Welcoming home a loved one is a great reason to celebrate. So is seeing someone before they leave. When these two events come together, it can mean only one thing: Family Day Picnic in West Virginia.
The day celebrated two units from Company A, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion—one returning from and one heading to war.
Staff Sgt. B.J. Vickers arranged the day for the military units.
Vickers contacted Wanda Harless-Hurley, President of Ladies Auxiliary VFW 5578, Madison, W.Va., for help with the picnic. Harless-Hurley applied for a grant from the VFW Military Assistance Program and received over $1,500 to provide food and fun at the picnic.
“It was really wonderful. The day was beautiful, and it was the perfect environment for our Marines to relax and spend time with their family and friends,” Harless-Hurley said.
Harless-Hurley along with two sisters, Kaye Watson and Carol Garretson, volunteered at the picnic, passing out small U.S. flags and “Pride in America” activity books to the children. |
